The US State Department has just released new travel advisory updates for 4 countries.
As we are in the midst of one of the busiest travel seasons, it is important that travelers are up to date with the latest information to stay safe while abroad.
The United States Department of State recently issued new travel advisories for these four countries:
- Ecuador
- Sri Lanka
- Nepal
- Maldives
The U.S. government has shared different information and updates on each destination, and travelers should consider recent advisories discussed in more detail below.
Just days ago, the State Department also issued travel warnings for 7 other countries: Uganda, Argentina, Denmark, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Bolivia and Peru.
Here’s what travelers need to know about the new review updates released this week for each country:
Ecuador
Level 2: Exercise extra caution
On June 22, a new update was uploaded to the official Ecuador travel advisory website.
The country remains at “Level 2: Exercise extra caution” as in the previous update, but this time the new information relates to crime.

The US government has warned of kidnappings and crimes in some areas, including the popular city of Guayaquil.
The new information indicates that travelers should avoid the provinces of El Oro – particularly Huaquillas and Arenillas -, Los Ríos, Santo Domingo, Manabí, Carchi, Santa Elena and Cañar.
These areas are high risk and higher crime rates have been reported.

Sri Lanka
Level 2: Exercise extra caution
The South Asian island nation remains at Tier 2 according to the US State Department, and new information included in the advisories is tied to health updates.
According to news updates shared by the government, there are drug shortages that could affect travelers, and the US government’s ability to assist is limited.
The country is going through a difficult economic situation, and protests related to the current crisis can break out at any time.
In addition, terrorist attacks have recently taken place in public places, including tourist spots.
Access to imported goods, medicine, fuel and food is limited, and there are problems with public transport. In addition, power cuts are frequent.
Travelers should be very careful when visiting this country.
Nepal
Level 2: Exercise extra caution
This popular destination among adventure travelers has also received a new health update.
The US government has said travelers should be aware that medical assistance and infrastructure in Nepal do not meet US standards.
In addition, there are political demonstrations that could turn into violent situations.
Travelers should not walk alone and it is recommended to stay away from demonstrations.
Maldives
Level 2: Exercise extra caution
The main travel warning for the Maldives is related to terrorism. Visitors should be aware that popular tourist spots and public places have been attacked by terrorist groups.
In the latest update, travelers are encouraged to monitor and review travel health advisories from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and also to avoid crowds and demonstrations.

- Pakistan – Level 3: Reconsider the trip
- Turkmenistan – Level 2: Exercise extra caution
- Tajikistan – Level 2: Be extra careful
- Kazakhstan – Level 2: Exercise extra caution
- Bhutan – Level 1: Take normal precautions
- India – Tier 2: Exercise extra caution
- Kyrgyzstan – Level 1: Take normal precautions
Most updates relate to health recommendations that travelers can also review on the CDC’s website.
For all destinations worldwide, US citizens are encouraged to read the Department of State’s recommendations – and follow them on social media -, enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and consult the US security report.
