Capcom recently released an update for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Resident Evil 2 and resident evil 3. Now, Digital Foundry has made a video dedicated to this technical update and explains the details of what the developer has achieved. You can see the video below. Please note that Resident Evil 7 is not included in this comparison and will be covered in another review.
First, Digital Foundry clarifies that Capcom has included new graphics optionssuch as improved resolution, ray tracing, and 120Hz support.
Digital Foundry started by looking at ray tracing enabled on two game components: reflections and global illumination. Previously, the reflex system in Resident Evil 2 and 3 had several issues. Now the average quality has improved, although the resolution is still not particularly high. The overall illumination has also improved, although this is more of an add-on than a true replacement for the stock lighting system. Overall, ray tracing doesn’t revolutionize the game according to DF, but it fixes some of the original issues.
For resolution, offer PS5 and Xbox Series X 2160p checkerboard, while the Xbox Series S stops at 1440p checkerboard. Microsoft’s small console also supports laser trace. Overall, for all consoles, the improvement is explained as minimal, but minor details such as loose hair or textures are clearer.
Performance obviously depends on the graphics mode chosen to play in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. With ray tracing active you get 40-60 FPS, with the Series S at 30-50 FPS. VRR helps improve the situation, but only on Xbox Series X and not on PS5.
Frame rate mode eliminates ray tracing and offers the aforementioned resolutions, but no FPS limits. The end result is usually around 100 frames per second, with a minimum of 80 FPS and a maximum of 120 FPS. In case of Series S, the result is similar to PS5 and Xbox Series X. Overall, the The Xbox Series X is the console that offers the best performancewith an average of 5 FPS more than the PS5.
