The Petrobras committee will decide on the appointment of the new president on Friday

The Petrobras Eligibility Committee announced today that it will assess on Friday (24) whether or not the communicator Caio Mário Paes de Andrade can become president of the public company. The decision will be made in a meeting with members of the company’s board of directors and staff. The statement came after the company this afternoon received the necessary files to analyze the legitimacy of its candidacy, which was nominated by the government of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The Ministry of Mines and Energy confirmed Caio’s name earlier this month. The process was seen as slow by the federal government, which is in a rush to change command of the company amid a crisis with senior state leadership caused by fuel price hikes announced Friday ( 17), when the company readjusted the value of gasoline by 5.2% and that of diesel by 14.2%.

The change of command of Petrobras was decided at the end of May. Andrade is the current Special Secretary Debureaucratization, Management and Digital Government, linked to the Ministry of Economy of Paulo Guedes, and responsible for the government platform (gov.br). He is also a board member of Embrapa (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária).

This is the third change in the management of Petrobras under the government of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The company was also chaired by Roberto Castello Branco and General Joaquim Silva e Luna.

Change to the Board of Directors

On Tuesday evening (21), the Ministry of Mines and Energy also announced that it had adjusted the list of candidates from the Union to compose the board of directors of Petrobras.

The published memo states that “only the names of the candidates representing the minority shareholders have been deleted, leaving the other candidates previously proposed by the” Syndicate.

In the list of names appointed by the ministry are Caio Mario Paes de Andrade to occupy the position of president of the oil company, Gileno Gurjão Barreto for the chairman of the board of directors, among others.

Currently, the federal government holds 36.6% of the total capital of the company and is the main shareholder of Petrobras, which guarantees the position of controlling partner, in addition to being among the main beneficiaries of the financial results of the oil company.

On Monday (20), the Union received another part, of 8.8 billion reais, of the profits of the public company. The figure is part of a total, already announced this year, of R$32 billion in dividends that will be paid until July to the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

Here are the names of the people appointed to the Board of Directors:

– Gileno Gurjão Barreto (Chairman of the Board of Directors);

– Caio Mario Paes de Andrade (Chairman of Petrobras);

– Ricardo Soriano from Alencar;

– Edison Antonio Costa Britto Garcia;

– Jonathas Assunção Salvador Nery de Castro;

– Ieda Aparecida by Moura Gagni;

– Ruy Flaks Schneider; and

– Marcio Andrade Weber.

No industry experience

Caio Mario Paes de Andrade graduated in social communication from Unip (Universidade Paulista). According to his LinkedIn profile, he did a postgraduate degree in administration and management from Harvard University (1992-1993), in the United States. However, he has no oil and gas experience, and governance rules require 10 years of industry experience.

Close to Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), the eldest son of the President of the Republic, Andrade has a positive assessment within the government for the establishment of the gov.br platform. In April this year, Guedes defended the choice of a name for the public company which is working to deverticalize the production chain of the fuel market in the country and to privatize the company.
