Mega-Sena: How much does the prize of R$70 million each month bring in savings?

Mega-Sena has accumulated again and can pay this Wednesday (22) an estimated price of 70 million reais. How much would this fortune earn per month if invested in savings or fixed income bonds?

O UOL spoke to Jhon Wine, financial educator at Dsop, who offers low-risk investment advice. The calculations take into account interest and inflation until Tuesday.

The prize amount announced by Caixa already includes a 30% reduction on the income tax rate, i.e. the winner of Mega-Sena will receive a net amount of approximately R$70 million. .

Savings offers 462,000 BRL per month

The savings account may be well accepted by Brazilians, but it is not recommended by investment specialists due to its low yield. Its profitability is currently 0.66% per month, according to the last update made by the BC (Central Bank), Friday (17).

The winner of Mega-Sena would have a monthly income of R$462,000 in savings, according to the expert’s calculations.

Wine says investors find other options for public and private bonds more attractive to their portfolios. In the case of Tesouro Direto, the maximum investment is limited to 1 million reais per month per person.

Trésor Selic and CDB: 560,000 BRL and 567,000 BRL

Wine points out that government bonds, national treasury bonds, and bonds from private institutions, such as banks, yield more than savings.

The Treasury’s Selic, which is linked to the base interest rate, the Selic — today at 13.25% — offers a yield of 0.8% per month. Mega-Sena’s millionaire prize would guarantee a passive income of R$560,000 per month.

The CDB (Certificado de Depósito Bancário) with 100% of the CDI (Certificado de Depósito Interbancário) has a slightly higher return: 0.81% per month. This investment option earns BRL 567,000 per month.

Both terms can be exchanged before the expiration date.

The IPCA Treasury earns R$735,000 per month

The Treasury IPCA is offering even more money to bond investors, according to the expert. This application is linked to the IPCA (Broad Consumer Price Index), which measures Brazilian inflation, currently at 11.73% over the past 12 months.

This title is more suitable for those who want to redeem the money in the more distant future to buy a house or a car, for example. The government offers options with expiration dates from five to over 30 years.

With a monthly return of 1.05%, the IPCA Treasury with redemption in 2055 returns exactly R$735,000 to the winner of Mega-Sena every 30 days.

Wine states that the investor must respect the maturity period to redeem the money, in order to avoid losses caused by asset price volatility.
