Companion Protect offers simple pet insurance available in all 50 states nationwide. Founded in 2014 for shelters and rescue animals, the company uses just three factors to provide a quote: your zip code, your pet’s age, and the species (cat or dog). Plus, unlike almost all other insurers, Companion Protect doesn’t have a waiting period once you’ve completed your enrollment.
Read on to see what Companion Protect offers and how much you’ll pay to insure your beloved fur baby.
Types of Pet Insurance Plans from Companion Protect
Companion Protect offers only one pet insurance plan with 90% reimbursement on each qualifying claim after payment of a $100 deductible. Also, society does not exclude animals based on their age. Instead, it reviews your pet’s medical history to determine any pre-existing conditions and will communicate any exclusions before you purchase your plan.
As might be expected, if there is evidence of the condition within the year before coverage begins or conditions treated within a few months of coverage (i.e. pre-existing and in awaiting treatment), they will be excluded from coverage in the future. This is because pet insurance does not cover routine care such as vaccinations or dental care for pets.
If you do not have recent medical records from the past 12 months, you may need to take your fur baby to a vet for a checkup and submit the report prior to registration.
How much does Companion Protect pet insurance cost?
We’ve priced the blanket for Insider’s imaginary Golden Retriever, Caboodle, who is three years old with no pre-existing conditions.

- Cancer treatments
- Respiratory problems
- kidney disease
- Urinary tract infection
- Diabetes
- Arthritis Care
- surgeries
- Hip dysplasia
- Patella and knee dislocation problems

Methodology: What went down in our Companion Protect pet insurance review
Insider rates pet insurance providers for friendliness, ease of enrollment, cost of coverage, and simplicity of the claims filing process. We also review customer reviews regarding the refund process. You can read more about our insurance pricing methodology.
In short, our opinion is not based on a single factor when evaluating a product. For example, the price of a small plan may be low, but it could leave you in the lurch if you have an emergency. Likewise, a policy may be complete with a strong customer service team, but some companies may not be accessible to the average consumer. We consider all of these factors together to get the full picture.

Compare Companion Protect and PetPartners
Companion Protect and PetPartners Pet Insurance couldn’t be more different when it comes to the enrollment process. Where Companion Protect only offers one plan across the board, PetPartners offers 169 options for pricing customization at the end of the day.
Compared face to face, Companion Protect seems to be cheaper initially. However, PetPartners charges an annual deductible, while Companion Protect charges a $100 deductible per qualifying claim. So you’ll get a better deal with Companion Protect if your furry baby rarely goes to the vet. However, PetPartners is best if your pet requires regular veterinary care.
Compare Companion Protect and Pumpkin
Pumpkin Pet Insurance and Companion Protect reimburse a flat rate of 90% on qualifying claims. Like PetPartners, Pumpkin charges annual deductibles, while Companion Protect charges a $100 deductible per claim.
Throughout the quote process, Companion Protect provides minimal information. For example, you will not get confirmation of excess, coverage limits, etc. until you submit your complete application. On the other hand, Pumpkin offers all this information early with unlimited coverage options. Pumpkin also has higher ratings for handling complaints based on what we’ve seen.
Compare Companion Protect and Healthy Paws
Healthy Paws pet insurance offers options to customize your deductible, limits, and more. It remains one of the most popular pet insurance companies, and we find it offers comprehensive options at affordable prices for many pets. Unfortunately, neither company offers a wellness plan for routine care. However, Healthy Paws responds to it, saying pet owners can schedule vaccinations and other regular care. However, its extensive pet insurance coverage prepares pet owners for the unexpected.
We’re concerned about the number of steps you need to take to get basic information, such as excess and policy limits with Companion Protect. Based on the prices, pet owners should have this information before purchasing. Healthy Paws makes data accessible and has higher customer satisfaction as a result.
