Mackinac Island is officially tourist royalty. Michigan’s legendary island is making headlines by being named “America’s Best Summer Travel Destination.”
In USA Today’s popular Readers’ Choice Travel Awards contest, Mackinac Island took first place as the best place to enjoy your summer vacation this year. Michigan’s historic tourist destination edged out popular spots in New York, Connecticut and Florida in this year’s annual “Readers’ Top 10 Picks” list.
Mackinac Island is no stranger to making these “best” lists, but considering the multitude of summer travel destinations across the country, taking the top spot on this list is pretty amazing. . USA Today says of the island in northern Michigan,
“Between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, you’ll find Mackinac Island, where you’ll ride a horse-drawn carriage along car-free roads, watch fudge being made (and then taste it), and visit historic Fort Mackinac. This lake The Huron-based mainland island is also home to Mackinac Island State Park, where you can hike, bike, kayak, and snap photos of the local natural beauty, including the stunning Arch Rock limestone.”
The Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau and The Grand Hotel both shared the good news on their social media account to celebrate the good news.
“Mackinac Island is a remarkable place and our community works so hard to make it the special place it is today,” said Mackinac Island Mayor Margaret Doud. “We are honored to be recognized for such an accolade and look forward to welcoming visitors to enjoy this treasured island for years to come.”
The timing of the news couldn’t have been better either with the island’s unofficial opening day on Friday, April 28, making it the perfect way to kick off the 2023 season.
