Paulo Jobim, son of composer and conductor Antônio Carlos Jobim, died this Friday morning, at the age of 72, in Rio de Janeiro. He had been dealing with bladder cancer for about a decade and could not withstand the complications of the disease.
A musician like his father, Paulo was a singer, guitarist, flautist and arranger, in addition to having a degree in architecture. He is one of the creators of the Antônio Carlos Jobim Institute which, since 2001, has worked to preserve and make available to the public the musical and poetic work of the maestro.
Tom’s firstborn, Paulo even performed alongside his father, as well as other important names in Brazilian popular music, such as Milton Nascimento and Chico Buarque.
Among the passions inherited from his father there was also an interest in the preservation of the environment, which led Paulo to sign urban planning projects that today contribute to the preservation of areas in places like the Chapada dos Guimarães, in Mato Grosso.
Information about the death was confirmed by the institute dedicated to Tom’s work, which did not provide details of the wake and burial. Paulo is survived by three children, including musician Daniel Jobim.
