A look at the action from Saturday’s meeting at Fairyhouse where Annamix and Instit both beat Willie Mullins’ better imagined stable mates.
Allegory is no match for the Institute
Institute Allegorie De Vassy, her much better trained stablemate by Willie Mullins, won the BoyleSports Mares Novice Chase at Fairyhouse.
Allegorie De Vassy looked like she had the perfect opportunity to find her way back to winning ways after being narrowly denied by Impervious at the Cheltenham Festival. It would have been an easy decision for Paul Townend to choose her over Instit, given that there was officially 20 pounds between them on the odds.
Everything seemed to be going smoothly for Townend as he trailed Instit (15-2) down the straight, but as has happened so many times in recent years, Danny Mullins had given his mount the perfect lap of the ‘Before.

After taking over the race to the last, Townend suddenly looked worried in front and Instit had barely regained the upper hand before Allegorie De Vassey made a jerky error and the race was over.
“She’s a mare that didn’t realize her potential over the fences compared to what I had seen of her over the hurdles,” said Danny Mullins. “I was aware of not setting it up for Paul and saving my own fuel in parts. The race went perfectly for him and my filly still managed to win. good even fractions for the first two miles and were able to breathe in. A big jump at the penultimate gave me a chance and of the two mistakes at the last mine was more minor allowing me to land at the galloped a bit faster and broke away to win nicely.
“The ground is pretty dead. We had a lot of rain last week, but there is fantastic grass and the course is in good condition. Strong wind and some sun today made it sticky. Fairyhouse takes a good jumping trick and the best horse usually wins.
Annamix achieves a remarkable victory
There was a surprise winner in the Low.ie Best For Mortgage Protection & Life Insurance Hunters Chase as Annamix (18/1) won for the first time since November 2020. Once an ante-post favorite for the Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, it’s fair to say Rich and Susannah Ricci’s Gray fell short of expectations .
Even in the sphere of hunter hunting he failed to reach the heights and he watched him drift from favorite Ferns Lock and stable mate Billaway to Mullins. But Charlie Mullins refused to accept defeat and he slipped away after the last to win by four and a half lengths. Ferns Lock passed out very gently in third.
“I knew they went pretty fast and I said I’d sit down,” said the winning runner. “I felt he had a chance to turn down the straight. When he passed one or two he grabbed me again. I let him fly at the end and he continued to pick up for me. He made some big mistakes and can take off from anywhere!

Drama as a Feature Awarded Belle
Beautiful Risk justified favoritism in the €100,000 RYBO Handicap Hurdle but needed help from the stewards to claim victory.
It was Sean Doyle’s Monbeg Park who was first after the past, heading home half a length behind the market leader 7/2 formed in Mullins. However, with half a yard to run, the two closed in and at one point Risk Belle was knocked down. Brian Lawless, on Monbeg Park, did his best to drag his mount away from Risk Belle, but he continued to lug right and the decision may not have come as a surprise.
Risk Belle had skipped the last Boodles advantages at Cheltenham before being beaten to a neck in third by Jazzy Matty, who finished on the pitch in this area.
It capped off a great day for owner JP McManus, who was on hand to welcome three winners, with Tony Martin’s Gain De Cause (15-8) winning the Fred Kenny Lifetime Services To Racing Ladies National Handicap Chase and Canal End (9 -4) the opening Tom Quinlan Electrical Maiden Hurdle.

Canal End was a win on his return to action for Mark Walsh, who having also been on Risk Belle will have been pleased with a brace on his first day since Cheltenham.
“She had a good experience at Cheltenham and you would have called her a winner jumping last and you would have just missed her at the top of the hill. She was a nice lightweight today,” said Walsh of Risk Belle. She rode well throughout the race and it was all smooth sailing after the last one. I hope she can continue to improve.
McManus race director Frank Berry said: “She had a few bumps. It’s never a nice way to win and also a horrible way to lose, but she ran a blinder. She had a bad fall in Leopardstown and was a bit unlucky in the Boodles, so it’s good for her to do that. She jumped well today and if she does well there is every chance she will go to Punchestown.
